Ice Maker Not Making Ice? Check These

Before you book a repair, check four things: the shut-off arm or switch position, the freezer temperature, the water filter's age, and whether the fill tube has frozen. Those four explain most silent ice makers, and two of them are free to fix. If all four check out, the fault is in the valve or the ice maker assembly, and that is a service visit.

The free checks, in the order we do them

Start with the obvious that fools everyone once: the wire bail arm lifted to the off position by a bag of peas, or the ice maker switch turned off during a cleaning. Next, the freezer temperature: ice makers will not cycle reliably in a freezer warmer than about 10 degrees, so a fridge problem upstream can silence the ice maker while the fridge still feels cold. Measure with a thermometer, not a hand.

Then the filter. A filter past its life fills the mold slowly until cycles time out and production stops, often after a stretch of small or hollow cubes that was the warning. Our ice maker repair page lists the same sequence we run on site.

The frozen fill tube trick

If the tube that feeds the ice maker freezes, water stops at the ice dam while the valve still tries. You may find a small icicle at the tube end above the mold. A hair dryer on low, patiently applied, clears it, but the cause, often a weeping inlet valve letting a slow drip freeze, will rebuild the dam. If the tube freezes a second time, book the visit and mention the repeat, because that detail points straight at the valve.

Water pressure matters as well. A saddle valve half-clogged with Williamson County mineral scale starves the fill. If your refrigerator water dispenser has also slowed to a trickle, filter and supply are the story, in that order.

When the assembly itself has failed

If water reaches the mold, the freezer is cold, and the unit never harvests, or it overfills and floods the bin, the ice maker assembly or its thermostat has failed. Assemblies are replaced as units on most models, and on many refrigerators that is a fair, bounded repair. Our refrigerator repair team confirms the water and temperature side first so the new assembly lands in a system that can actually feed it.

Questions About This Topic

How long should an ice maker take to recover after a fix?

Expect the first batch within a few hours and a full bin in about a day. Production ratings assume a cold freezer and normal door traffic, so give it a full day before judging.

Why are my cubes hollow or small?

Slow fill. The mold fills on a timer, so low pressure from a clogged filter, a pinched line or a tired valve means less water per cycle and hollow shells. Fix the fill and the cubes fix themselves.

Can I turn the ice maker off while I am away?

Yes, and it is a reasonable precaution against leaks on long trips, along with closing the supply valve if it is accessible. Lift the bail arm or use the switch, and empty the bin.

My ice tastes bad. Is the ice maker at fault?

Usually the water or the freezer, not the maker: an old filter, or ice stored long beside strong-smelling food. Fresh ice from a clean bin with a current filter resolves most taste complaints.
